Fundraiser date for Mining memorial

A FUNDRAISING event in aid of Hucknall Mining Memorial will be held tonight (Friday February 15).

The Royal British Legion Club will host this FREE night of music and dance which will give guests the chance to rekindle some dance memories from the 60s/70s and 80s with the TS Roadshow playing the tracks.

“We are hoping for a good response to the event which looks like it should be a great night,” said former miner Barrie Lewis, who has been instrumental in the campaign.

There will also be a light buffet and raffle held during the night at the Beardsall Street club with all proceeds going to the expansion of the memorial.

“We have been really supported well by local traders and big name stores giving us prizes for the night,” added Barrie who worked at Linby Colliery for 14 years.

“With times being hard the response has been terrific.”

Raffle prizes include driving lessons and gifts from Argos and Tesco.

“Boots have also been very generous offering us beauty product gift bags.”

The event has been organised to boost funds further in an attempt to reach the £10,000 milestone needed to add a memorial to the current iconic miners’ statue on Station Road, Hucknall.

It is hoped a record of the names of the pitmen who lost their lives can be added with memorial stones placed on the site and brass plaques.

Mr Lewis, whose father, Lawrence (34), was killed in an accident at the former Hucknall ‘Top Pit’ on Christmas Eve 1960, has received full backing from the Dispatch for his campaign.

A suggestion is for the memorial to be backed by a book featuring the names of those killed at the two Hucknall collieries, Linby, Bestwood, Newstead and Annesley pits.

Mr Lewis added: “It is a monumental task gathering all the names for the memorial as there is no central database but we are getting there.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel and thanks to the support we have received the appeal and the memorial is convincingly moving in the right direction.

“We hope to reach our target soon.”
