Funeral victims demanding answers

WORRIED Bulwell man Charlie Tennant plans to attend a special public meeting to help people who lost money when a firm of funeral directors suddenly closed.

The meeting will be held at Nottingham Council House on Friday March 27, starting at 1 pm, and anyone interested can turn up.

Nottingham City Council have organised the meeting and deputy leader Coun Graham Chapman (Lab) will be present, along with police and trading standards officers.

Coun Chapman said: "The aim is to find out if there is any scope for people to recover their money."

Elderly people were left out of pocket when the firm, Glenbrook Funerals, of Nuthall Road, Aspley, suddenly shut up shop.

Glenbrook, who had taken thousands of pounds from customers for pre-payment of funerals, ceased trading in December 2007.

Mr Tennant (77), of Musters Walk, paid Glenbrook a total of 2,450 in advance to cover the funeral of himself and his wife, Margaret.

He has since been informed that the bill for the two funerals would come to 5,000 at today's prices and he does not know what he is going to do if he can't get his money back.

A police investigation was launched after 38 Glenbrook customers complained but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have decided there is no basis to press criminal charges.

Two funeral directors, Crawley and Sons, of Aspley, and Julie Wesson, of Beeston, have each offered free funerals because they feel much sympathy for people affected.

But Mr Tennant said that, sadly, he had so far not obtained the same response from firms he had approached.
