Gedling Council produces pack on democracy for primary schools

SCHOOLS across the Gedling borough will have access to a specially designed pack to teach children about democracy.

Primary schools will be encouraged to set up school councils to empower children to make decisions within the school and express their opinions through a council-led initiative.

The scheme has been trialled at Westdale Infant School in Mapperley, where Gedling councillor Kathryn Fox has worked with teachers and pupils alike to develop the School Councils Pack that is now available to all schools in the borough.

The pack includes advice on how to set up a School Council, ideas for running an election, what individual members of the School Council do, and the benefits of having a School Council.

Coun Fox, who is Portfolio Holder for Community Development, said: “I have young children myself, and my inspiration for this initiative was that children should be helped to realise that they have a voice to bring about positive change in their school and community.

“I also wanted to introduce and explore the concept of voting within the school environment, to encourage children to be part of the democratic process and to understand how this parallels with the role of local councillors and MPs.”

Gedling Borough Council is now contacting all infant, junior and primary schools in the Borough to see if they would like a pack. Schools who get involved and set up their own School Council will also be invited to Gedling Civic Centre to have a tour of the council chamber and civic areas, and meet councillors for a question and answer session.
