Generations join forces for trek in aid of soldiers
HISTORY was made by members of the Royal British Legion’s Bulwell branch in a gruelling challenge — even though one had to drop out.
Trevor Johnson (54), of Raymede Close, Bestwood Estate completed the Legion’s 30:30 with his sons, Trevor Jnr (35) and Peter (26), and his grandson, James (23).
Another son, Daniel (32), had to withdraw at short notice because of family commitments but it still meant that, for the first time, three generations of the same family tackled the 30:30.
This involves carrying 30lb in weight while walking across Exmoor National Park in Devon.
They completed the arduous challenge in 11 hours and 49 minutes, finishing seventh out of 15 teams.
The achievement was particularly satisfying for Trevor Snr, who proved his fitness despite having undergone a quadruple heart bypass operation eight years ago.
“What I remember most about the 30:30 is that the weather was bitterly cold,” he said.
Trevor Snr had not done any training because he already experiences lots of exercise as a result of his work as a gardener.
The family members recognised it was going to be a tough challenge but they rose admirably to the occasion.
The team hoped to raise £2,500 through sponsorship for the Legion’s centre in London. Anything left over was for the Bulwell branch, which meets at Bestwood Road Sports and Social Club.
Sadly, they did not get anywhere near that figure but are hoping the total they raise will reach about £1,000.
The Legion’s Bulwell branch secretary, John Prichard, said: “They can feel very proud of what they have achieved.”
