How to combat threat of doorstep crooks

CRIME-conscious residents over the age of 50 in Bulwell were given tips on how to ward off doorstep conmen, rogue traders and distraction burglars at a special event.

Held at the Ken Martin Leisure Centre, on Hucknall Lane, the free event included a play on doorstep crime by theatre group Acting About and a police DVD on how to avoid becoming a victim of distraction burglars.

The event was organised by the trading standards department at Nottingham City Council with the council's neighbourhood management teams, the police and Neighbourhood Watch.

About 100 people turned up for the event, with most of them staying for the full day.

Coun Eunice Campbell (Lab), the council's portfolio holder for human resources, customer services and consultation, was also there and received good feedback from many of the local residents.

She said: "The people I spoke to found the day interesting. In particular, they thoroughly enjoyed the theatre group and found it gave them a good understanding of how to protect themselves from doorstep crime. They all wanted to see more events of this nature in the area in the future."

The leisure centre also ran a free swimming session, an aerobics class and the opportunity to book for a free gym-induction.

A spokesman for the leisure centre said: "There was a good buzz around the place all day."

Other organisations represented at the event included the charity Age Concern, Notts Fire and Rescue, the city council's Telecare service, which enables the elderly to live independently in their own homes for longer, the Preventative Adaptations service, where the elderly can identify their own needs and request small changes to their homes, the Warm Zones service, which provides free or grant-aided energy-efficiency measures, the Pensions Service, Severn Trent Water and Central Networks.
