Hucknall girl (6) in accident blackspot drama
A POPULAR six-year-old Hucknall girl suffered a broken thigh bone in a shocking and dramatic road accident in the town on Wednesday night.
The air ambulance was called in and landed on the Washdyke Lane recreation ground as emergency services rushed to help little Lara Arnold.
Large crowds gathered as the youngster was eventually taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham — by road — after she was in collision with a car on the accident-blackspot Washdyke Lane at about 6.30 pm.
She underwent surgery yesterday (Thursday) morning, when elastic pins were inserted into the leg. She was in traction overnight and it is not known how long her recovery will take.
But Lara’s grandmother, Dawn Shaw (50), of Greenwood Vale, Hucknall, said: “She tends to bounce back quickly when something goes wrong.”
Although the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance attended, Lara was so distressed it was decided to take her to hospital by road ambulance instead of air-lifting her there.
The accident occurred at almost the exact spot where Hucknall teenager Daniel Banks was killed six years ago. The 17-year-old was also in a collision with a car, which was tragically being driven by one of his neighbours.
Lara had gone with friends to the recreation ground on Washdyke Lane, which has been extensively upgraded in memory of Daniel as the result of a campaign by his friends.
Lara was trying to cross the road between parked cars to go to Pears’ shop when the drama unfolded. The car, driven by a woman believed to be in her 40s, had just emerged from the junction with Belvoir Street.
Natasha Trebicki (26), of Ogle Street, Hucknall, who is a relative of Lara, said she was at the scene of the accident and helped to calm her down.
“She was still talking but she was obviously very shocked,” said Natasha.
She added: “Nobody was to blame for the accident. It was just one of those very unfortunate things.”
Lara’s father, Anthony Arnold, is well-known in Hucknall and stood as a Conservative in the Ashfield District Council elections last year. He said it had been a ‘very dramatic and traumatic’ time for the whole family.
He added that when Lara was placed in traction, a twitching muscle aggravated the break. She was in a lot of pain but had since felt a lot calmer.
Police have investigated the scene of the accident.
Nearby residents have called for improved safety measures on Washdyke Lane, including a ban on vehicles parking next to the recreation ground
Coun John Wilmott (Lab), of Hucknall, who is deputy leader of Ashfield District Council, said: “I very much hope that Lara makes a speedy recovery and my thoughts go to her family.”
