Hucknall’s National Academy celebrates GCSE success
HIGH-ACHIEVING GCSE students at Hucknall’s National Academy have really made the grade, outperforming both the county and the country.
In league tables published by the Department for Education, the Annesley Road academy recorded an impressive 71 per cent five GCSEs A* to C, including maths and English pass rate - a healthy six per cent increase on last year’s achievement.
The figure smashes the county average of 60.6 per cent and is streets ahead of the national average of 59.4 per cent, whilst the academy’s ‘big five’ pass rates have risen by 14 per cent overall since 2009. The Value Added score of 1020 was the academy’s best ever.
Principal Dr John Edwards said: “We are very proud of these achievements. To get good grades, young people have to work consistently hard for the whole of the course, and these results were achieved by our young people as they put the effort in.
“Another huge factor is our teachers and support staff, who have a very determined attitude and are focussed on the achievement of all our young people.”
Figures at Holgate Comprehensive were less positive, however, with pass percentages at the Hillcrest Drive school eight per cent lower than in 2011. Just 39 per cent of students sitting their GCSEs last summer achieved the benchmark grades.
Headteacher Wayne Barsby said: “The school was affected by an English exam marking issue. A further seven per cent of students achieved both English and maths passes and have progressed to A-level courses, but unfortunately these statistics didn’t count in the tables due to an exam entry issue.
“Teachers, governors and students are working hard and we hope to push over the 50 per cent mark in this summer’s exams.”
At Bulwell Academy, there was a bitter sweetness about students’ below-average results. Although the Squires Avenue academy - which falls under the city council umbrella - only managed a 31 per cent pass rate, the figure was six per cent up on 2011 achievements, which indicates steady improvement.
Principal Paul Halcro said: “We recognise the progress made from 2011 and have an ongoing challenge of raising the achievement of all at the school. We anticipate a significant increase this summer and won’t be satisfied until our results are as good as they can be and every student achieves their best.
“All staff are working hard and are committed to making sure this happens.”
