Hucknall soldier wounded in Afghanistan launches poppy appeal
A HUCKNALL soldier who was recently wounded while serving in Afghanistan took part in the annual poppy launch of the town's Royal British Legion branch.
Lance-Corporal Nick Chauntry had the honour of receiving the first poppy at the event, held at the Legion club on Beardall Street.
Among the guests were the newly-elected Liberal Democrat member of Ashfield District Council for Hucknall Central ward, Coun Kevin Moore, fellow Hucknall councillor, the Rev Tom Irvine, a United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) member of Notts County Council and the Legion branch chaplain.
Colour Sergeant Russ Haywood and his detachment of the Hucknall Army Cadet Force escorted the guests into the club.
The versatile Kenny Barton, a multi-instrumentalist, comedian and singer, entertained during the evening.
Branch poppy appeal organiser Barry Straw and treasurer Rob Barham said they were "most impressed" with the sum of 370 raised on the night. The money will go towards the appeal.
