Labour picks trio to fight for Hucknall seats
LABOUR has chosen its three candidates for the Hucknall ward at the Notts County Council elections next May.
They are ALICE GRICE, NEIL CLUROW and JOHN WILKINSON.
Alice lives locally and worked with the Crown Prosecution Service for several years before leaving to concentrate on bringing up a famiy.
She is currently studying for a degree and says she is looking forward to new challenges now that her daughter is reaching school age.
She says: “As the mother of a young child, I am aware of the current anxieties about childcare and education that parents may have.
“I am also seeking to represent the increasing number of people who find themselves taking on caring responsibilities for older relatives and ensuring that the care system is one they can put their faith in.
“I hold a particular interest in issues which include education, family health and well-being, domestic violence support and personal safety. Hucknall deserves the best and that is what we would endeavour to achieve at County Hall.”
Neil was born in Hucknall and left the town in 1989. After gaining a degree at Nottingham University, he went on to spend 14 years working in community and legal services. He eventually became chief executive to one of the largest charities in the East Midlands before leaving to manage operations at Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire.
Since returning to Hucknall in 2009, Mr Clurow has worked for a local authority, helping individuals and families who find themselves homeless and utilising his vast knowledge of social welfare law.
He says: “My specific interests reflect a passion and commitment to the voluntary sector and providing services to support vulnerable children and adults. I also want to see high-quality advice services as well as sustainable transport systems and prosperity of the local economy.”
John came to Nottingham when gaining a degree in economic history at Nottingham University and he moved to Hucknall in 1981.
He has worked as a charity fundraiser, as co-ordinator of Hucknall Community Centre (now John Godber Centre), and now works in hotel management.
He already has experience of local government, having served both as an Ashfield and county councillor.
He says: “I am passionate about economic regeneration and the development of Hucknall as a vibrant, thriving town in particular.
“I am keenly interested in economic development as well as finance and budgetary matters. But my main focus is on a need to bring genuine long-term jobs to the local community.”
