Milestone for toy library

PLAY sessions at Bulwell Community Toy Library (BCTL) during August are of special interest.

For they mark a milestone 25 years of the BCTL, which was Nottingham's first toy library.

Since then it has grown to be a shining example of good practice throughout the UK and is recognised in the government's National Play Review, headed by former Health Minister Frank Dobson.

BCTL has provided play and social opportunities for literally thousands of children and families over the last quarter of a century, including support to children with speech and language delay.

The toy library is remarkable for its track record of involving parents at all levels. One mum, Julie Wyer, says: "For me, the toy library has been a great part of my children's development.

"Our local play and lending session has been a weekly event, rarely missed and always looked forward to both by my sons and myself.

"Now, as a member of the committee, I am involved in the decision-making process and feel part of a really worthwhile community organisation."

The toy library will be holding a 'giant play event cum teddy bears' picnic' for Bulwell families next Wednesday from 12 midday to 4 pm, to be opened by its patron, Bulwell's Labour MP Graham Allen, and BCTL president Chris Firth.

A delegation of parent/volunteer committee members has been received by Mr Allen and Mr Dobson at the House of Commons.

Anyone involved with BCTL since its inception in 1979, including ex-volunteers, workers and families, can get in touch for a personal reunion.

Anyone interested is asked to contact Jenny Forde, Julie Wyer or Lawrence Jackson on 0115 9753898, e-mail bulwelltoy.lib@ntlworld.com or write to BCTL, Norwich Gardens Centre, Squires Avenue, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8GG.

The toy library is currently supported by a range of funders, including Nottingham City Council and Surestart-Bulwell, which has commissioned its services.

Exciting prospects lie ahead as BCTL, currently located at Norwich Gardens Centre, is shortly relocating to more suitable premises.

From there, it hopes to grow with improved or new activities and services during the next 25 years.
