Miners statue memorial appeal boost

AN evening event held recently to raise money for the Miners’ Memorial Appeal was deemed a success by organisers.

A night of music from the 60s/70s and 80s was organised at The Royal British Legion Club on Friday February 15 to raise more money towards the appeal led by Barrie Lewis.

And a collection was held the following day at Bulwell’s Tesco store to add to the coffers raised on the night.

“It was a good night boosted by the raffle which was made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses and traders,” said Barrie who se father, Lawrence (34) was killed in an accident at the former Hucknall ‘Top Pit’ in 1960.

“Overall we managed to collect £439 towards the appeal.”

These events have helped boost funds further helping towards the £10,000 target to make a lasting memorial at the site of the iconic miner’s statue on Station Road, Hucknall.

It is hoped the names of the pitmen who lost their lives can be added with memorial stones and brass plaques.
