BESTSELLING author John Grisham topped a list of the most loaned library books in Notts with his legal thriller The Litigators.

Already a hit in the best seller literacy lists in America, the novel has been revealed as the most popular book across Nottinghamshire libraries in 2012.

Grisham’s 25th novel centres on a legal tussle between a Chicago law firm and a major pharmaceutical drug company over a cholesterol reduction drug.

But EL James’ Fifty Shades of Grey has not made the Notts top ten despite being one of the most written about books of 2012.

Notts County Council said crime novels had become more popular across the council’s library service, with prolific author James Patterson boasting three titles in the top ten – Private Games, Don’t Blink and Killed Alex Cross.

The Top 10 books loaned by Nottinghamshire Libraries in 2012 were:

1) The Litigators (John Grisham) 2016 loans

2) Beyond a misty shore (Lyn Andrews) 1748 loans

3) Zero Day (David Baldacci) 1672 loans

4) Fault Line (Robert Goddard) 1604 loans

5) Private Games (James Patterson) 1480 loans

6) The Affair (Lee Child) 1252 loans

7) Believing the Lie (Elizabeth George) 892 loans

8) Don’t Blink (James Patterson) 856 loans

9) Good as Dead (Mark Billingham) 792 loans

10) Kill Alex Cross (James Patterson) 788 loans

Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James was loaned 690 times, placing it outside the top ten.

Steve Baker, principal library for information services at the council, said: “Crime and thriller titles dominate the top ten list as they have for a number of years.”

“At this time of year people are making all kinds of new year resolutions and the vast majority will be to do with their physical health.”

“Take more exercise, lose weight, and give up smoking and so on but how many people think about their mental wellbeing?”

“Reading is a great way to stimulate the mind, to learn new skills, to exercise your imagination and to relax. Joining and using a library is free, why not make a resolution to give your mind the attention it deserves?”
