Motorists stopped in crackdown on dangerous driving
AROUND 25 vehicles were stopped during a five-day crackdown on dangerous drivers in the rural parts of Ashfield last month.
Nottinghamshire police worked with Ashfield District Council, Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and HM Revenue and Customs during the week of action to catch any motorists breaking the law.
It took place in areas including Annesley Woodhouse between Monday August 20 and Friday August 24.
During the week, officers carried out high-visibility patrols and used a mobile speed gun to identify speeding drivers — although no drivers were found to be breaking the speed limit.
Some vehicles were found to be using red diesel, which is normally used by farmers and is illegal for other motorists.
Offenders were given a £500 fine and were ordered to pay duty costs on the fuel in their tank.
VOSA discovered vehicles were dangerous and not roadworthy. The drivers were issued with prohibition notices, which prevents the vehicles from being used until repairs are carried out.
Two motorists were stopped for driving without insurance and another was stopped for not having a driving licence.
One driver received more than £1,000 worth of fines.
Pc Simon Lacey said: “We want to make our roads safer for motorists and pedestrians and by carrying out operations like this, we are able to do just that.”
