AN INTREPID team of cyclists from Hucknall have received prestigious awards in recognition of their fund-raising efforts.

Last summer, Andrew Jowitt (18), his sister Hannah (21) and friend Joe Stafford (18) set out to tackle the gruelling Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Their efforts, and those of pupils at a number of primary schools in Nottinghamshire, meant that they raised more than £7,000.

The trio decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK as it was a cause close to their hearts.

Joe’s mum, Julie, who had been a receptionist at Hucknall’s National Academy, died from cancer.

Andrew and Hannah are former National Academy pupils, while Joe is still in the sixth form.

Staff at the school were so inspired by the trio’s efforts that they nominated them for one of the Diana Awards, which were founded in 1999 by the UK Government to act as a lasting legacy to Princess Diana.

Andrew said: “We were all pretty humbled and honoured to be nominated.

“The awards, in memory of Diana, are mainly for teenagers who have got up and done something to help in their communities so to get one was really good.”

The prestigious awards ceremony took place in London earlier this week at the Canary Wharf headquarters of Barclays, a major supporter of the awards.

Due to the death of a close family member, the trio were unable to finish the ride but plan to cycle the final part later this year.

John Edwards, principal at the National Academy, said: “We were very proud of their achievement, and the fact it was their idea.

“I cycled with them on one leg of the ride and got an insight into how hard it was. It really was an impressive thing for them to do.”
