Neighbours need to look out for elderly in snow

DISPATCH district residents are being urged to look out for elderly neighbours in the current cold snap.

Gedling Borough Council, the NHS Nottingham North and East Clinical Commissioning Group together with Age UK Notts have joined forces highlighting the dangers of the current snowy conditions, especially for the vulnerable.

Sharing is Caring is an initiative designed to encourage support for older people and is supported by the three organisations.

“Older and more vulnerable people can really be suffering in weather like we’re having at the moment,” said Coun John Clarke, leader of Gedling Council. “We’re working with the NHS and Age UK Notts to help our elderly isolated and vulnerable residents remain safe in their own homes in a warm healthy environment.

“However we’d ask residents to help by just keeping an eye out for their neighbours and being extra vigilant during the cold spell.”

Fuel poverty is an issue for many pensioners – not having adequate heating, or adequate means to pay for it and as part of the initiative Age UK Notts refer enquiries to Gedling Council, who then carry out a home fuel assessment and signpost people to organisations and initiatives that can help.

Age UK Notts also offers training to community health professionals so that they are equipped to identify vulnerable adults on home visits and refer them.
