New head teacher wants pupils to feel proud

THE new principal of Bulwell Academy says he wants young people to feel proud of being students there.

PAUL HALCRO (pictured) has taken over the position from Graham Roberts, who retired at the end of the summer term.

Mr Halcro (42) was formerly a deputy head teacher at Thomas Telford School in Shropshire, which is one of the UK’s top schools.

Before then, he taught at large secondary schools in Wolverhampton.

He is seeking to build on the legacy of Mr Roberts, focusing on developing both academic achievements and employment skills to prepare students for future success.

“I am also aiming to bring clear leadership to help drive forward the highly-successful teaching approaches used by Thomas Telford School and continue the progress of the academy,” he said.

“I believe passionately in raising aspirations in young people, celebrating achievements and focusing on the positive. This is an exciting time for the academy and I am looking forward to building on the great work already done by Graham Roberts.

“I feel privileged to have been chosen to lead the academy, which already has a fantastic track record. It has a superb building, committed staff and enthusiastic students.”

One of Mr Halcro’s aims is to expand the sixth form from 60 pupils to 250 in the coming year, which he hopes will see more students going to university.

He also hopes the 31% of students who gained five A* to C grades in this year’s GCSEs, including English and maths, will rise to 50%.

Mr Halcro is especially keen for the academy to continue its close liaison with local businesses so that students get the vital experience they need for jobs.

Along with the Edge Foundation, which has supported the academy since it opened in 2009, the Thomas Telford School will also be providing sponsorship.

Mr Halcro looks forward to an interchange of visits between staff of the academy and the Shropshire school.

Parents of year-six pupils at Bulwell primary schools are being invited to meet Mr Halcro next Wednesday from 6 pm. They will be able to tour the building and meet staff to learn about the curriculum on offer.
