New lease of life for community centre and library in Bulwell

THE Red Lion Community Centre in Coventry Road, Bulwell and the historic former Bulwell Library in Highbury Road are both to have a new lease of life as community facilities for local people.

Nottingham City Council has now completed the sale of both these properties, which have been unused since the completion of the new Bulwell Riverside joint service centre, which opened in 2012.

The sale of the former Bulwell Library building was completed in January. The property is soon to be occupied by Take 5 Theatre School of Dancing – a local group who are relocating into the historic library building from the top floor of the Old Town Hall in Bulwell.

The sale of the Red Lion Community Centre has also recently been completed, with the purchaser hoping to find a tenant for the property in the near future. Interest has been shown by community groups, and a training provider. Self contained accommodation to the rear of the property could be attractive to a nursery tenant.

Coun Graham Chapman, deputy leader of Nottingham City Council and portfolio holder for economic development, resources and regeneration, said: “Nottingham City Council is pleased to have sold these two important community facilities in Bulwell, meaning both buildings will now take on a new purpose which will be of clear benefit to the local community.

“There is a good chance that Bulwell will get a double benefit. Not only has it got one of the most successful joint service centres in the Midlands in the Riverside centre, it will possibly benefit from additional facilities in the buildings released by the change.”

Nottingham City Council also currently owns the former Housing Office at 1 Gilead Street in Bulwell town centre. Since the New Year serious interest in this property has also been shown.

Anybody interested in this property should contact the council’s instructed agents, Innes England on 0115 924 3243 / 07866 264118. The price for the freehold interest, with vacant possession, is guided at £275,000.
