Newstead Abbey to host Festival of Words

LORD Byron’s ancestral home Newstead Abbey will play host to the first Festival of Words which takes place next month.

Lovers of literature will be able to enjoy a host of poetry and storytelling activities at the event which takes place on 9th February.

During the day there will be readings of contemporary poetry as well as a talk about the ‘rock star’ lifestyle of Lord Byron.

The talk coincides with the 200 year anniversary Byron’s speech to Parliament in support of the Luddites, many of whom came from Sutton and the surrounding area.

In the evening, visitors will be able to scare themselves with spooky stories with Something in the Shadows.

Entrance to the estate and the ground floor of the abbey will be free from 11am to 4.30pm (car parking £6 per car or £1 walk-in charge) and various poets will be roaming around the cloister.

For details visit call the abbey on 01623 455 900 or visit www.nottwords.org.uk.
