Nottinghamshire’s service men and women set to be honoured in mosaic at County Hall

THE go-ahead has been given for a new mosaic at County Hall to honour the men and women of Nottinghamshire who have lost their lives in military action or in public service.

The mosaic, in the county colours of green and gold, will remember the men and women from the armed forces, emergency services and others who have lost their lives in public service.

The green granite mosaic with a gold compass will feature the county coat of arms, the Nottinghamshire County Council logo and the coat of arms for the offices of The High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Kay Cutts said that the mosaic would be a lasting memorial to hundreds of people across the county who have given their lives for others.

She said: “This mosaic will honour the men and women of our county who have sacrificed their lives whether it be in carrying out their civilian duties or in a military capacity – we are proud of all of them.”

The new mosaic will replace an existing mosaic that was unveiled in 1990 to celebrate 100 years of public service in Nottinghamshire. The existing mosaic needed replacing as a number of tiles had cracked due to adverse whether conditions in recent years.

The memorial will be surrounded by solar powered lights to represent an eternal flame and the gold compass points to the four corners of the county and the four corners of the world.

Work will get underway on the mosaic during the summer and it is hoped it will be unveiled for Remembrance Day services in November.
