NOTTS COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS: meet the Hucknall ward candidates

A FULL rundown of the candidates standing for the three Hucknall seats in the Notts County Council elections on Thursday June 4.

CHRIS BARON (Labour)

A member of Notts County Council for 12 years, he is currently their Cabinet member for environment and sustainability. A Hucknall resident for 24 years, he has been a member of the Unite (Transport and General Workers) union for 30 years and runs a Nottinghamshire haulage company. He is the current chairman of Hucknall Partnership Group and a governor of Holgate Comprehensive School, Hucknall. He is spearheading a campaign for a National Health Service healthcare centre in the Hucknall area, which is gathering pace.

MARK BRINSLEY-DAY (UK Independence Party)

A public sector worker for Nottingham City Council, he has also been a volunteer driver for the social services. He has been an active member of the Nottingham UKIP branch for many years. He is a regular churchgoer and says the church plays a very important part in his life. He was involved in the campaign to save Hucknall's Wigwam Lane playing fields.

KEN BROWNE (UK Independence Party)

A successful hotel proprietor for 30 years, he says his business experience would stand him in good stead if he became a county councillor. He is strongly against over-centralisation and wants more power to be transferred from central government to local councils.

SUSAN GAMBLE (British National Party)

Aged 37, she was a candidate in the Ashfield District Council elections in May 2007. She lives in Edingley, Newark and is company secretary for an electrical business which she and her husband, Paul, set up in Ashfield 17 years ago. She says the people of Hucknall have been good to the couple and she wants to put something back into the community.

THE REV TOM IRVINE (UK Independence Party)

He is well-known in Hucknall as a United Reformed Church minister in the town for 40 years, now at the Farleys Grove church. A native of Ayrshire, Scotland, he was head of religious education, social education, health education, general studies and sixth-form head at Eastwood Technical Grammar School from 1965 to 1989. He has been a chaplain for the Notts Police Authority for 15 years, as well as being Hucknall's Royal British Legion chaplain, a Masonic Grand Lodge chaplain and an Army chaplain for seven years. He is a member of Notts Golf Club and was a former footballer for Leicester City A team, as well as being active as an athlete and swimmer.

TREVOR LOCKE (Labour)

A Hucknall resident, he is a former member of Ashfield District Council and has led many campaigns for the benefit of the community. He has set up two residents' groups and is chairman of the Friends of Titchfield Park group. He is a governor at Broomhill Junior School, Hucknall and sits on the town's Byron Charity. He works for the Ministry of Defence and has been a member of the GMB union for 20 years.

KEVIN MOORE (Liberal Democrats)

A resident of Wighay Road, Hucknall, he has strong family links with the town.He has personal experience of what it is like to be a victim of the economic downturn because he is currently redundant. He was 50 last Saturday and he has a 20-year-old daughter at Lincoln University and a 17-year-old autistic son. He is prospective Lib Dem candidate for the Sherwood constituency, including Hucknall, at the next General Election.

MICK MURPHY (Conservative)

He has served on Notts County Council since a ground-breaking by-election victory in January 2007, making him Hucknall's first non-Labour member of the authority since local government reorganisation in 1974. In his early 50s, he is married with two daughters and has lived in Hucknall for 32 years. He has worked at the town's Rolls-Royce plant on Watnall Road for 20 years. His hobbies include classic cars and collecting clocks.

ROBERT RANKIN (Conservative)

He was elected to Ashfield District Council in his first election in May 2007. Aged 48, he has been a Hucknall resident since 1991. He is married to Beverley and they have four children. He previously lived abroad in places which included Hong Kong, Turkey and Germany because his father was a regimental sergeant major in the Army. He has worked in the insurance trade for more than 30 years with many big-name companies. He is a past member of Hucknall Rotary Club and has worked with various charities. A talented singer, he is currently trying for success on TV's 'X Factor'.

AUSTIN RATHE (Liberal Democrats)

Aged 26, he won a Hucknall West seat on Ashfield District Council in a by-election in July 2006 and retained it at the May 2007 elections, after which he became the authority's deputy leader. He lives on Clumber Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and is managing director of a Nottingham-based technology firm.

KEVIN ROSTANCE (Conservative)

A lifelong Hucknall resident, he is 53 and an 'old boy' of the town's Holgate Comprehensive School. He has run his own security business on West Street, Hucknall for more than 20 years. He is married to Jayne and they have three sons, Anthony, Philip and Adam. In his second term as president of Hucknall Rotary Club, he is also manager of Papplewick and Linby Cricket Club's under-15s' team as well as captain of the club's third team.

DAVE SHAW (Labour)

A Hucknall resident, he has served on Notts County Council since 2005 and was elected to Ashfield District Council in May 2007. Aged 47, he formerly worked for Hucknall's biggest employer, Rolls-Royce, and at the former National Coal Board workshops in Bestwood Village. A member of Nottinghamshire Police Authority, he helped to ensure that a local area police commander was based in Hucknall and he supports the town's four ward-based safer neighbourhood committees. He sits as a governor on Hucknall's Holgate Comprehensive and Butlers Hill Infant Schools and is an active member of Hucknall's Interchange youth centre.

GEOFF THORPE

He insists on a blank after his name because he stresses he is standing as a candidate in his own right with a view to serving the community. He was elected to Ashfield District Council in 2003 as an Independent member and later switched to Labour. A family man, he is 57 and lives on Jenny Burton Way, Hucknall. He is involved in various community groups and he is a governor at the town's Butlers Hill Infant School.

HARRY TOSELAND (Liberal Democrats)

Aged 76, he has been involved with the Liberal Party, which evolved into the Lib Dems, for more than 40 years. He lives on Wordsworth Avenue in Hucknall and has been married to wife Jean for 22 years. He became chairman of Ashfield District Council straight after being elected to the authority in May 2007. He is well-known in Hucknall for his past connections with the town's Lovelace Theatre Group (formerly Hucknall Dramatic Society), as a writer, producer and actor, and often starred as a pantomime dame. He also used to play the Sheriff of Nottingham at the city's former Tales of Robin Hood tourist attraction.

KEVIN WORRALL (English Democrats)

A resident of Wood Lane, Hucknall, he is aged 52 and has his own domestic carpeting and upholstery cleaning business. His party want to see a separate Parliament for England and "an end to Scottish and Welsh ministers running English government departments". They are also calling for St George's Day (April 23) to be England's national holiday.
