'Outstanding' school receives double accolade

CHILDREN, staff and governors of Hucknall's Holy Cross Catholic Primary School are celebrating a magnificent double success.

For the school, on Leen Mills Lane, has been hailed as 'outstanding' by inspectors from the government's Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) and also by a Nottingham Catholic Diocese report.

The OFSTED inspection took place on Monday and Tuesday, February 9 and 10, followed by the diocesan inspectors' visit on Tuesday February 24.

OFSTED lead inspector Kenneth Thomas said Holy Cross, which has 172 pupils aged four to 11, met the children's needs extremely well.

He went on: "The school has improved significantly since the last inspection and has an excellent capacity to maintain this momentum. Pupils are very proud of their school and keen participants in the rich opportunities it provides.

"They enjoy coming to school and the excellent curriculum is carefully planned to motivate and nurture their enthusiasm for learning, Pupils' attendance is excellent and they make significant contributions to the school and to the wider community."

Mr Thomas said one delighted parent, whose views were echoed by many others, commented: "I would recommend the school to others who want a school with a sense of community, good discipline, kindness and care for one another."

The OFSTED report went on to praise the dedication of head teacher Pat Snowdon, strongly supported by staff and governors.

"Together they provide an education that meets the needs of each individual within a Catholic Christian framework," said Mr Thomas.

"These shared values influence every aspect of school life, so that pupils feel safe, secure and respected and their spiritual, moral and cultural development is excellent.

"Pupils leave exceptionally well prepared for secondary education."

Similar praise is heaped on Holy Cross in the diocesan report, which states: "Values such as respecting others, honesty, tolerance and co-operation are at the heart of this school community."

Holy Cross is given six grade-one (outstanding) and two grade-two (good) assessments by OFSTED in the inspection categories, while the school gets eight ratings of outstanding and one of good from the diocesan inspectors.

Mrs Snowdon said she was delighted with the inspection results, which were a tribute to everyone involved.
