Papplewick Green could be set for expansion after David Wilson and Barratt Homes plans get green light
PAPPLEWICK Green could be about to expand further if a planning application from David Wilson Homes and Barratt Homes gets the go-ahead.
Ashfield District Council has received the application from the developers for the green light on phase two and phase three of the Papplewick Lane site.
Phase two includes 104 dwellings, including 23 affordable dwellings under the Barratt name, while phase three is for 89 dwellings under the David Wilson banner.
The site has been cloaked in controversy since plans for the estate were first mooted years ago. Many town residents opposed the plan as it meant losing valuable playing fields at the site off Papplewick Lane and Wigwam Lane.
The campaign to save the Wigwam originally started back in 1997 but gathered full momentum in 2006.
A lengthy legal process ensued as campaigners fought to stave off developers with public inquiries and a judicial review - but it was all to no avail.
But this latest application will mark completion of housing on the site which is currently two thirds completed.
“This latest application is simply the end of the saga,” said Nottinghamshire county councillor Mick Murphy who was a leading campaigner against the original plans.
“The battle has been fought and lost and run its time. It’s no good arguing over a few houses now in this latest application.”
Once Papplewick Green is completed it will hold over 700 new homes.
As part of the scheme, a new primary school was promised, something Coun Murphy is keen to see realised.
“I am waiting for the application for the new school any day now,” he said. “I’m told at County Hall that a planning application for the school is imminent.”
The new school will replace the old Victorian Beardsall Street School and also accommodate all the extra families now living on Papplewick Green.
“This new school is desperately needed to alleviate the problem of over subscribed schools in the area,” added Coun Murphy. “I look forward to seeing the plans soon.”
