Part of gang who held machete to cab driver’s throat

A 23-year-old man has been jailed for seven years for his part in robbing a taxi driver who was threatened with a machete.

Gareth Beeson was among five people who got into a minibus that was called to Nine Acre Gardens, in Bulwell, during the early hours of Tuesday June 5 this year.

After the group got in, the driver was grabbed from behind and the knife was held to his throat.

He tried to wrestle free but as he did one of the group stole cash from his jacket pocket as another person searched the glove compartment.

As the engine was turned off and the key taken out of the ignition, the driver managed to get out of the minibus only to be confronted by other members of the group.

He was forced to handover a bag of cash and was then struck on the side of the head with the machete before the group ran off.

The victim sustained a six-inch cut to his head and required 11 stitches.

Beeson, of Bethnal Walk, Bulwell, was charged with robbery and admitted the offence during a hearing at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was sentenced on the same day to seven years in prison.

Det Insp Neil Fountain said: “This was a particularly nasty robbery of a man who was just trying to earn a living and the severity of the crime is reflected in the length of the sentence handed down to Beeson.

“Through the courage of the victim and the determination of the officer in the case, Det Con Rachel Woodford, Beeson is now facing a significant time behind bars.”

A total of five people were arrested in connection with the offence. Two were released without charge. Two others, a man and a woman, were charged with robbery alongside Beeson but no evidence was offered in court and the case against them was not progressed.
