Plan to demolish landmark pub

BULLDOZERS ON THE WAY? An application has been launched for permission to demolish The Swinger in Bulwell

A WELL-known landmark on the Hucknall-Bulwell border is set to disappear.

The former Swinger pub on Hucknall Lane is now owned by glazing firm Leivers and Millership.

The company is planning to demolish the pub as part of a £1 million project to build a new trade-sales centre for windows and fascias.

A planning application to demolish the Swinger has been received by Nottingham City Council.

Leivers, who also bought the adjoining Hucknall Lane Service Centre, will continue to use this building as a garage.

The firm says the extra space would be used to provide more MoT-testing bays and a tool hire centre. About a dozen new jobs would be created.

Leivers began trading across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire more than 20 years ago. Its order book has included schemes for Notts County Council and Nottingham City Hospital.

The company’s former site on Watnall Road, Hucknall is due to be converted into new homes but its base in Newstead will be kept for double-glazing trade.

The Swinger was hit by an arson attack in June 2011, when much of the bar was destroyed and the two-storey building was damaged by heat and smoke.

Like many other pubs, the Swinger has been hard hit by the recession and a decline in trade. The Apollo pub, on another part of Hucknall Lane, has already been demolished.

Coun John Hartshorne, a Labour member for Bulwell ward on the city council, welcomed Leivers’s expansion plans and the new jobs they would create.

“But I am worried that it is close to the Nottingham Road end of Hucknall bypass, which is a horrendous junction at peak traffic times. I fear that getting in and out of the premises is going to be very difficult. Concerns have also been raised about possible noise from the proposed centre for neighbouring residents.”

The pub was formerly the Forest Hotel but has been locally known as The Swinger long before it adopted the name officially a few years ago.

There are various stories of why it was so called. One version is that Nottingham City Transport buses turned round at the terminus, which used to be located next to the building.
