Plea as spate of burglaries leaves trail of devastation
POLICE are warning householders in Hucknall to be on their guard after a spate of house burglaries in the past week left a trail of victims.
Eight different properties across the town were targeted with four burglaries taking place within a 48-hour window, which police believe were connected.
Many break-ins were through unsecured windows and doors and even a dog flap allowed burglars to gain access to one house.
Car keys were the target in two instances with cars stolen but later recovered in different locations.
A Ford Mondeo stolen from Long Hill Rise at around midnight last Friday was recovered in Bulwell a short time later. A Ford C-Max taken in a burglary in Polperro Way in the early hours of Thursday last week was found in nearby Abbots Drive last Sunday.
“We are linking these burglaries and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity around the locations of the break-ins in the early hours of Thursday and Friday,” said Det Insp Richard Monk. “But we also want to prevent any additions to this series.
“While the neighbourhood policing teams will be adapting their patrol plans to deter criminals, the public can also help.”
Other properties targeted include a house in Belvoir Street where a pit motorbike was taken; a jewellery box, laptop and computer were stolen from a house on Papplewick Lane where a back bedroom window was smashed; a house on Lime Tree Road was targeted for its games consoles and laptop; while intruders were disturbed and nothing taken from houses on Glebe Street and Royce Avenue.
A number of shed break-ins were also reported to police in the past week.
Det Insp Monk added: “Burglars are very often opportunists who will look for homes which have insecure windows and doors, or keys left in locks.
“There are very simple steps that householders can take to ensure they do not fall victim to similar burglaries.
“They include locking all entrances and windows when you go to bed at night, or even when you leave a room. Keep keys in a safe place out of view and make sure valuable items are not left out on display.
“If you have a flap for a dog or cat, it is best to have one that can only be opened from the inside. It may seem an unlikely point of entry or access, but a determined burglar will try almost any means to get what they want.”
