Police meeting for fire-death estate

THE tragic death of a grandmother in a fire at her home has led to a special meeting being arranged on Bulwell's Snape Wood estate.

This will take place at the community centre in Snape Wood Road on Thursday (July 9) at 6.30 pm for residents to meet officers from the police, the Fire Service and Nottingham City Council neighbourhood management team.

Bulwell's police commander, Inspector Chris Davies, said: "We have called the meeting to listen to concerns expressed by local residents about a number of incidents within the estate.

"These include the fire in South Snape Close which resulted in the death of 54-year-old Susie Southern.

"We want to hear from members of the community to listen to the problems that are occurring. We are also anxious to reassure them that different agencies are committed to making the local community a safer and good place to be."

Meanwhile, friends of Mrs Southern are raising money to fly her daughter, Elaine Southern, back from Australia.

Elaine, who has lived Down Under with her partner and two daughters for five years, has been unable to raise the money to pay for a flight back to be with her grieving family.

An appeal has been launched by family friend Lisa Godber (29), of Aspley, who worked with Mrs Southern at a nursing home in Nottingham.

She said: "I e-mailed Elaine and asked if she was any closer to getting home. She said the family are trying to sort things out and would do anything to get back here.

"Flights would cost around 1,000 per person and Elaine would want to bring the kids with her."

Mrs Godber ran a small collection at work and has put up notices in two locations on Snape Wood – the shop in Aspen Road and the Blenbheim pub. "Anything that anyone is able to give will help," she stressed.

Mrs Southern's body was found on the first floor of her home. She lived there with her husband, Tony, who escaped the blaze on Thursday June 25.

William Rowbotham (18), of Raymede Drive, Bestwood Estate has been charged with the murder of Mrs Southern.

He is also accused of arson with intent to endanger the life of Mr Southern and burglary with intent to steal at a separate address on South Snape Close.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Monday June 29 and was remanded in custody.

A 35-year-old man arrested after the fire remains on police bail.
