Police in 80mph chase through town centre
A 20-YEAR-old man has been jailed after leading police on an 80mph chase through Hucknall and Bulwell in a stolen car, Nottingham Crown Court heard.
Aaron Kirby sped through red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road with several police cars in pursuit and a helicopter tracking him from the sky.
The chase lasted 20 minutes with Kirby continuing to drive even though three of the tyres on his Vauxhall Astra had been punctured by a stinger – a row of spikes thrown across the road by police in a bid to stop him.
The court heard that Kirby only stopped in the early hours of Thursday November 27 when he crashed into a wall.
Police officers had earlier spotted Kirby driving the car on Valley Road, Basford. A check revealed the Astra had been stolen two days earlier but Kirkby ignored a request for him to pull over.
He turned into Hucknall Road and accelerated to 80mph. He drove through Bulwell and along Hucknall Lane – on the wrong side of the road – in the direction of Hucknall.
Again he hit 80mph in Hucknall town centre, where there is a 30mph limit, and he narrowly missed an oncoming car.
Kirby then sped on to Station Road and Watnall Road where he drove through two more sets of red lights.
The court heard that even though the stinger was used, Kirby continued to drive with sparks flying from exposed wheels.
The chase finally ended on the A38 near Alfreton.
Kirby, of Wrenthorpe Vale, Clifton, admitted aggravated vehicle-taking and the court heard he had previous convictions for drink-driving and possession of an offensive weapon.
Alan Bower (defending) highlighted that no-one had been injured. In mitigation, he said his client had been affected by the fact that his daughter had been born with a hole in the heart and had to udnergo 14 operations.
But Recorder Douglas Herbert jailed him for 16 months and banned him from driving for a year.
