HUCKNALL motorbike racer Rob Collison has completed his first full season in magnificent style — as a champion.

His 40th birthday falls today (Friday) and his success has certainly given him something to celebrate.

Collison, of Springfield Road, has been competing in the Formula 400 class of the East Midlands Racing Association (EMRA).

Last weekend’s race at Mallory Park in Leicester saw him qualify second in his class. Then, after a tight battle with arch rival Chris Spooner, he finished his second event in the same position.

In the afternoon, the weather deteriorated big time but Collison — who rides a Yamaha machine — produced a superb performance in torrential rain to come home in first position by eight seconds.

In the final race of the day, for novice riders, Collison came home in fourth but was on the first 400cc machine home.

The combination of results earned him the ‘Novice Rider Of The Day’ trophy. More importantly, however, it secured him a 2012 championship award.

It was a very praiseworthy success because the EMRA has made a name for itself by holding prestigious events at Mallory Park for many years and prides itself on providing riders with affordable sport.

Collison travels all over the country for his job as an electrician and he spent 18 months working on the Olympic Games Stadium in London.

He said: “I have been interested in bikes from being a schoolboy. It is quite gratifying that my first racing success has come at a fairly advanced stage of my life. I suppose it is a case of better late than never.”

“It was quite hair-raising to race in pouring rain at the afternoon event. But it seemed to bring the best out of me and I have always enjoyed a challenge.

“Becoming a champion has given me the incentive to carry on and try for further success.

“I am very grateful for all the support I have received from my family and friends, and I certainly hope this will continue.”
