Relationship going swimmingly!

A HUCKNALL couple who have celebrated their golden wedding are living proof that age is no barrier to keeping fit.

For Frank Cresswell (76) and his wife, Mary (71), of Leabrook Gardens, are both keen swimmers.

And Mary completed 40 lengths of the Hucknall Leisure Centre pool in stages last year to help her towards a coveted gold award in the Discovery scheme.

Inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh awards, this initiative provides an opportunity for over-50s to tackle new challenges.

The couple tied the knot at St Michael’s Church, Underwood in March 1958 and have resided at the same address all their married lives.

Born in Newstead, Frank was employed at the National Coal Board’s area vehicle workshops at Bestwood for 30 years until his retirement.

Mary (nee Cutts) hails from Bagthorpe and before her marriage, she worked for a firm of clothing manufacturers in Selston.

The couple are both active members of Hucknall 50-Plus Club, which meets at the town’s leisure centre, and stalwarts of Hucknall Wesleyan Reform Church.

Mary was Brown Owl with the 8th Hucknall Brownies, based at the Royal British Legion Social Club, for 33 years.

Before she stepped down from this position, she started a Trefoil Guild for older members and it is still going strong.

Mary enjoys all kinds of craft work, including cross-stitching and making cards.

The couple have three daughters, two grand-daughters and two grandsons.

A golden wedding party was held at Newstead Miners Welfare Community Centre. Frank and Mary have received no fewer than 74 cards to congratulate them on their milestone anniversary – DISPIC 08-0616-1.
