Road-rage attack on deaf driver

A DRIVER refused to stop for police after a road-rage attack on a deaf motorist in Bulwell, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

Marc Baker was driving a stolen black Audi car on Saturday May 23 when he pulled in front of another vehicle on Hucknall Lane.

The victim thought nothing of it until Baker 'cut him up' and forced him to the kerb, the court was told. The man, who has not been named, said he had to do this to avoid a crash.

Later on, the Audi pulled up alongside the victim's car again at a set of traffic lights. A passenger in the Audi spat at the driver of the other car and swore at him.

The man, who was wearing a hearing aid, could decipher the bad language.

Police officers nearby saw what happened and tried to stop Baker, who lives on West Leigh Road, Strelley.

But he sped off, hitting a police car and the leg of the victim, who had got out of his vehicle.

Baker reached 60mph in a 30mph zone and swerved between other cars as he tried to avoid officers.

However police soon found the car parked up and arrested Baker. The passengers were also arrested but no details have been released on what has happened to them.

The court accepted that Baker did not know he was driving a car that had been stolen on Sunday April 19. It has since been returned to the owners.

Baker pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

He was given a 30-week suspended prison-sentence, banned from driving for a year and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Judge Michael Stokes QC said Baker carried out deliberately bad driving to intimidate the entirely innocent victim.

But he added: "I'm prepared to accept, as does the Crown, you were not aware until police drove up behind you that you were driving a stolen vehicle. You were driving because you were the only one of the three who was sober."
