Saturday maths club boost numeracy levels at Bulwell Academy
THE Bulwell Academy has launched a special Saturday maths club for students and their parents as part of an initiative to boost numeracy skills.
Called Teachers Helping Parents Helping Students, the scheme follows a successful project last year that saw additional support for Year 11 students who needed tutoring to progress more rapidly in preparation for GCSE exams.
Ashlee Betts, teaching and learning leader for the academy’s mathematics department, said: “Saturday morning classes have been enthusiastically received by our students and have proved a success with more than a third of the targeted cohort attending on a regular basis.”
The success of the 2012 project was proved when more than 70 per cent of the Saturday students who entered maths exams in November achieved a grade C.
It is hoped that the scheme will be rolled out to include pupils at the academy’s feeder schools.
