School ready to rock with Queen musical

AN AMBITIOUS Hucknall school is promising to leave audiences Ga-Ga-gagging for more with a production of the Queen musical 'We Will Rock You'!

A 60-strong cast of youngsters at Hillside Primary are to stage four instalments of the West End hit.

The curtain goes up on Tuesday June 30 at 6.30 pm and the other performances are on Wednesday July 1 at 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm and Thursday July 2 at 6.30 pm.

All the iconic Queen hits will feature in the one-and-a-half hour show, including 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'We Are The Champions', 'We Will Rock You', 'Another One Bites The Dust', 'Radio Ga Ga' and 'I Want To Break Free'.

The school is one of only a handful of primaries across the country to have been granted a licence by Queen Theatrical Productions Ltd to stage the show.

Apart from a few tweaks to clean up some of the swearing, it will remain largely faithful to the full-blown stage version.

Nathan Brough, who has been cast in the lead role of Galileo, said: "In the last few weeks, we've made amazing progress. We're all confident it's going to be awesome.

"I've never really done anything like this before but I love Queen's music and was over the moon when I got the part."

Tickets for the show cost 2 and are available from the school office on the Roberts Lane campus.

Also involved in the production are musicians from Hucknall's two comprehensive schools, Holgate and National.

Musical director and Hillside teacher Ben Marshall said: "After our production of 'Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' from last year, this was always going to be a tall order.

"Doing 'We Will Rock You' was a big gamble. But the kids have risen to the challenge in an amazing way.

"The music is fantastic and the audience really are going to be in for a treat."

Mr Marshall is also a music producer and added: "I had the pleasure of working with Queen on their tour last year and I'd like to think they would be pleased with what the kids have achieved.

"None of us have ever tried anything so ambitious with children. But it's now coming together and there's going to be some very proud parents and teachers on the night."
