ADVENTUROUS school staff got on their bikes in a cycle challenge to benefit two Hucknall youngsters whose mum tragically died on a family holiday.

Maria Butler was just 34 when she died following a heart attack in Turkey leaving her children, Georgie, 13 and 10 year-old Harry devastated.

The children both attend Bracken Hill Special School in Kirkby as they each suffer from the same syndrome which has caused Georgie to be deaf and Harry to lose his hearing in one ear.

Maria’s parents have taken over caring for the children and a trust fund has been set up in their names which has prompted several fundraising events. It was after learning of this that a number of staff at Bracken Hill decided to step in.

“They are wonderful children and very well liked at the school,” said teacher, Neil Amos who organised the event. “A few of us decided to take on a bike ride from the school to Skegness to raise sponsorship to boost their trust fund.”

The group consisted of teachers, Jenni Wright and Neil, teaching assistant Debbie Baxter, Jenni’s husband Steve and Matt Rawson. They enlisted the help of Andrej Machalski and Kath Harris who offered a support vehicle for the journey.

The group of five staff got in the saddle on Sunday October 14 at 7.30am but it wasn’t long before they hit trouble.

“Within a mile of the school a car had driven into the side of my bike, buckling the wheel,” explained Neil. “The team managed to straighten it sufficiently for me to continue but with no back brake. The driver did give us £100 for the fund though.”

“We are hoping to raise £1,500 for the children thanks to the support of our family, friends and staff who have sponsored all the riders.”
