SCHOOL ‘LEAGUE TABLES’: National top of GCSE class

SCHOOLS in Hucknall and Bulwell are facing up to a mixed bag of results after the latest ‘league tables’ for GCSE exams were published by the government.

The star of the show is Hucknall National Church Of England Academy where 93% of pupils gain at least five GCSE qualifications at good grades (A* to C).

The success outstripped the county level of 82.4% and the national standard of 79.5%

The school also saw almost two of every three exam candidates (65%) bagging five A* to Cs including maths and English.

Both sets of results are above the national and Nottinghamshire averages of 58.9% and 49.4% respectively.

At Holgate Comprehensive in Hucknall, the percentage of pupils gaining five top grades, including English and maths, in last summer’s tests climbed six points to 47% on the results from 2010.

The levels of students who recorded five top grades overall was 78% — an increase of 14% on the 2010 levels and the school’s best-ever result for this category.

But for Bulwell Academy, there was disappointing news.

For its standards dipped considerably when it came to five A* to Cs, including maths and English.

The percentage of pupils who met this standard plummeted to just 25% — a dip of ten per cent on 2010 results and considerably below the national and city (46.7%) averages.

The academy off Hucknall Lane was launched as part of a £23 million project that saw Bulwell’s former Henry Mellish and River Leen Comprehensives amalgamated.

It has a particular focus on vocational qualifications and the statistics make better reading when results drop English and maths and take in all GCSEs and equivalent qualifications.

For in this category, the academy saw 69% of students achieve five or more top grades.
