Sports clubs in Ashfield get a funding boost

SPORTS clubs in Ashfield have benefited from a funding boost from Nottinghamshire County Council.

The council has decided to support grassroots sport following London 2012 with a £1m funding pot this financial year.

In addition, it recently extended its funding by a further £700,000 for the coming financial year 2013/14.

Grants from the Legacy Fund have been awarded in recent weeks to around 100 clubs in Nottinghamshire through the Kick Start and Kick Start Rapid funding streams.

Yesterday, council’s culture committee made a large number of awards from its Game Changer funding stream, providing successful clubs with grants of between £10,000 and £50,000.

Coun John Cottee, culture committee chairman who is at the council said: “We are delighted that the Sports Legacy Fund has captured the imagination of local people and it is superb that so many clubs took the time and effort to apply.

“Again, we had a lot of interesting applications to the Game Changer fund and hope this money will make a real difference to successful clubs.

“We anticipated a need for sports funding following London 2012 and the response has been terrific. We are determined to ensure we build on the legacy of the Games.”
