Tesco ready to open in Bulwell

'EVERY little helps' is Tesco's well-known slogan.

But the supermarket giants are offering more than just a 'little' with their proposed new superstore in Bulwell, which represents a 25 million investment.

As revealed in the Dispatch, the development, which is expected to create 440 jobs, has been given the green light by Nottingham councillors.

Tesco originally put in their planning application about a year-and-a-half ago but then revised it to include a petrol station.

The superstore, covering a total of 5,458 square metres of floorspace, will be built on the site of the former Kwik Save premises off Main Street, which are now badly dilapidated.

There will be non-food shops and 430 car-parking spaces.

Most shoppers have revealed that they are delighted with the proposal, which will do much to transform and regenerate the town centre.

Audrey Harris (38), who lives in Basford, said: "I enjoy shopping in Bulwell and will do so even more when the new Tesco is opened."

Mother-of-three Teresa Hart, of Crabtree Farm Estate, said Bulwell town centre badly needed another food store.

Jack White (67), of Cinderhill Road, Bulwell, said he was particularly pleased that the historic former Scots Grey pub, which is to house a restaurant, was incorporated in the plans.

However concerns have been raised about two aspects of the proposal.

Gren Connelly, who is in business at Connelly Home Centre on nearby Jennison Street, said he was worried that building the superstore could cause water to accumulate on his land, which was already on a flood plain.

And Jackie Morris, of Bulwell Environment Group, said she had been "completely ignored" by Nottingham City Council over fears that a dog-leg section of the River Leen could be turned into a cesspit as a result of the development.
