Thai mission to help victims of sex trafficking
AN INTREPID teenage girl from Papplewick is to take part in a project aimed at stopping girls being sold as sex slaves.
Holly Jemmett-Allen (18), of Linby Lane, has been accepted on to a programme with a Christian organisation, Youth With A Mission (YWAM), which is linked to the anti-slavery Not For Sale campaign.
Based in Townsville, Australia, YWAM runs a course which consists of three months training — either in Thailand or Papua New Guinea — to include lectures, ministry placement and practical skills development.
“In Thailand, my team would work with already-established care programmes for girls who have escaped slavery,” said Holly. “We would help to rehabilitate them and build relationships. We want to show they are valuable and train them in useful skills.
“In Papua New Guinea, my team would raise awareness among rural communities.
“We would teach girls how easy it is to get trafficked and how to stop the signs of it in their own villages. They may then be able to better protect themselves against being coerced into slavery.”
Holly has taken her A-levels at Bilborough College. She has applied to go to university but has deferred her entry through getting involved with the YWAM scheme.
She is well on the way to raising £6,000 for her enterprising initiative and she hopes to reach the full amount by the end of this year.
All the money is going into an account held by Hucknall’s Watnall Road Baptist Church, which Holly attends, and this means she will be able to claim 25% gift aid.
Holly’s parents are Michelle and Ian and she has a 15-year-old brother, Joe. “I think this project is something well worthwhile,” she said. “My family have been very supportive, although my mum is a bit worried about it.”
The Rev Ian Smith, a minister at the church, said: “This is a brave thing for Holly to do. People at the church are very proud of her.
“We are supporting her every week with prayer and wish her well in the project.”
Anyone willing to support Holly is asked to contact her on 0115 9638656 or 07503 169635.
