Town delivers for kids hit by tragedy
A TRUST fund for the two children of tragic Hucknall mum Maria Butler, who died on holiday in Turkey, has been given a major boost.
Proceeds of a charity fun day at the Red Lion pub on Hucknall High Street totalled £3,000 — and donations still to come in could take the amount up to about £4,000.
Maria, who was born in Hucknall and would have been 34 next Wednesday, suffered a massive heart attack. She was put on a hospital life support machine which was switched off on Monday September 3 after all her organs failed.
The body of Maria, who lived on Rockwood Walk, Beauvale Estate, has been brought back to England but her funeral has not yet been arranged.
Her daughter, Georgie (13), and her son, Harry (ten), who went with her on the holiday, are now being looked after by their grandparents, Margaret and Malcolm Butler (both 70), who live on Charles Street, Hucknall.
Margaret said the two youngsters, who both have learning difficulties, were ‘very loveable’.
She added that it was hard to tell how they were reacting to the loss of their mum. But one night she had found Georgie hugging and kissing a photo of Maria in their bedroom.
Maria’s sister, Jackie Fisher (48), of Mansfield, said the tragic death had come as a devastating loss to the whole family.
She described Maria as an ‘amazing mum’ and ‘one in a million’.
Jackie stressed that the trust fund was important as Margaret and Charles were not entitled to carers’ allowance because they were pensioners.
All the family are full of praise for Hucknall people for supporting the trust fund and taking the two children to their hearts.
“They have been truly amazing and we cannot thank them enough,” said Jackie.
The Red Lion was thronged with well-wishers throughout the fun day. Local band Stage Fright gave their services free at the event, while other attractions included a disco, bouncy castles, face painting and a barbecue.
An Acer tablet computer, worth £400, was on offer in a silent auction and raffle prizes included a new power shower with free fitting, worth £600.
Red Lion assistant manager Collette Allen said she was delighted with the success of the fun day and family friend Nick Smith praised everyone for ‘pulling together’.
