Town’s mail-sorting office to be scrapped

THE ROYAL Mail sorting and delivery office in Bulwell is to close — despite a campaign to prevent the axe from falling.

It is understood the last shift at the site on Highbury Road will be in May.

Last year, the Dispatch revealed the controversial closure proposals after the postal service had twice denied any move to shut the long-standing operation.

It sparked anger locally, particularly with the town’s Labour MP, Graham Allen, and local Labour members of Nottingham City Council, Couns Nick McDonald, Eunice Campbell and Alan Clark.

A petition was launched and it received the backing of hundreds of residents with signing sessions at the office and Bulwell Market Place.

Mr Allen dubbed the closure proposal as ‘unfair’ as it will see the office merged with another site in Nottingham, possibly the delivery office in Sir John Robinson Way, Arnold.

Bulwell residents will now face a seven-mile round trip for some mail services, including collecting any mail and parcels that couldn’t be delivered to their homes.

The closure has been confirmed despite a summit meeting held in Westminster involving Royal Mail, Mr Allen and Coun McDonald.

Mr Allen said: “This was a very disappointing result. I don’t believe our views were listened to at all.”

Royal Mail has blamed a fall in mail volumes for the closure. An official date for the closure has not been announced.

Royal Mail collection and delivery sector manager Wayne Jay said: “We are telling our people about the move now before the detailed planning starts.

“We want to be able to work with our people on the change and have the opportunity to discuss the implications with individuals.”

It has previously been stated there would be no job cuts as part of the decision. There are no plans to make changes to the Hucknall delivery office on High Street
