Trader given community service for selling counterfeit goods
A TRADER who sold counterfeit CD’s in Hucknall has received 120 hours community service at Nottingham Magistrates Court.
Harniel Negi (43) of Wilford Crescent West, Nottingham, was caught with 470 counterfeit DVDs in the car park of Hucknall Car Boot Sale last April during an inspection by Trading Standards officers from Nottinghamshire County Council.
DVDs titles for sale included War Horse, The Hills Run Red and American Pie along with a quantity of unclassified DVDs of a pornographic nature.
His home address was also raided where copying equipment and 4,758 DVDs were seized as part of the prosecution.
Negi pleaded guilty to five charges under the Copyright Design and Patents Act 1988, three charges under the Trademarks Act 1994 and three charges under the Video Recordings Act 1984 when he appeared before the court on 10th January.
The estimated cost of counterfeit goods to the UK economy is £500,000,000 each year in loss of revenue to legitimate businesses and taxes.
Coun Mick Murphy, chairman of the Community Safety Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “The County Council will not tolerate the sale of counterfeit goods in the county.
“Counterfeit goods reduce trade for legitimate retailers, which has a negative impact on their businesses and the local economy as a whole.”
