VIDEO: Newstead Abbey sparkles for Christmas
SANTA was just one of the many guests at historic Newstead Abbey over the weekend.
The famous man in red swept through the Abbey gardens and house to the delight of young visitors who were touring the former home of famous poet Lord Byron during the Christmas at Newstead event.
This annual event is proving really popular adding a different dimension to the delightful attraction as traditional decorations adorn the property.
“We had over 500 visitors on Sunday which was wonderful,” said site manager Penny Beniston. “Father Christmas spent time meeting and greeting our young visitors who had their photographs taken with him and spent time telling him their Christmas wishes.”
As well as having the chance to explore the Abbey and see the rooms decorated for the festive season, there was also a Christmas Craft Fair on offer.
Many different craftspeople were displaying their wares in the Orangery and Cloisters over the weekend and will do the same next weekend giving guests the chance to buy some alternative presents.
“The crafts on offer were a small, varied selection of handmade goods,” added Penny. “This included textiles, jewellery and wood carvings - a very traditional collection.
“Children could also get involved by making cards and tree ornaments to take home with them.”
Don’t miss the opportunity to see Christmas at Newstead which runs again this weekend from 11am to 4pm along with the festive Craft Fair.
You can also take time out and enjoy the seasonal favourites now being served in the cafe.
Penny added: “Our festive fayre includes mince pies, speciality liqueurs and tasty turkey baguettes as well as mulled wine and home-made delicious fruit cake.”
Entrance costs £6 for parking which gives you free entrance to the Craft Fair with admission to the House priced at £5 adults, £1 children. But if you quote “Christmas Boatswain” at the gate you can gain entry for half price.
