Warning over Ashfield mobile phone thefts
FOLK who received new mobile phones, laptops, bikes, sat navs and TVs for Christmas are being urged to make sure they keep them safe.
The warning has come from the Ashfield Community Safety Partnership and Mansfield Partnership Against Crime - which says there a number of ways to help protect new presents from thieves.
Officers say folk with new mobiles should record the unique IMEI number found on the device - which helps the mobile service provider to block the phone if it is stolen.
Owners can also register it at www.immobilise.com, which enables police to return stolen phones and any other property they find included on the free online register.
The partnership says sat navs are among the items most frequently stolen from vehicles, with an increase in thefts in recent weeks. It says the most obvious way to prevent any sat nav theft is for motorists to remove them from their vehicle when they are not in it.
Householders can also mark an item by writing their postcode on everything from TVs and PCs to games consoles and cameras.
