Young people at knife-crime conference

ABOUT 100 young people are to attend a conference in Newstead to raise awareness of knife crime.

Several agencies from across Nottinghamshire have come together to host the event, which takes place at the Miners Welfare Centre on Tilford Road between 10 am and 3 pm on Friday March 20.

The interactive conference will see teenagers, aged 14 to 16, take part in dance workshops, arts and drama, music and performances as well as informative workshops.

The aim is to showcase a whole range of positive activities that young people can get involved in and it will challenge media stereotypes of teenagers.

The conference will produce many positive images aimed at giving other young people inspiration to take part in rewarding projects building their self-esteem and confidence.

The inter-agency conference is seen as a celebration of young people and aims to challenge the perspective of knife crime in Nottinghamshire.

The slogan for the conference is 'No Knives? Positive Lives!' and a spokesman said: "Too often, there is a tendency to equate young people with knife crime. By holding this conference, we aim to dispel such an impression."

The dance workshops will start at 10.30 am, 12.25 pm, 1.15 pm and 2.15 pm.
