Hucknall families have been taking part in a healthy lifestyle programme at the town’s leisure centre as part of an Ashfield District Council initiative.

The B Active B Healthy programme has been running between November 2013 and January 2014 and has had an extremely positive impact on the young people attending.

The course has run in partnership between the council and Everyone Active, to provide families with information and support to lead healthier lifestyles in a fun environment through physical activity and healthy eating.

During the activities, the young people spent an hour taking part in multi-sport or junior gym based activities and, in the healthy eating session, they had an opportunity to learn about nutrition and how to eat a healthy and balanced diet.

“B Active, B Healthy is a great initiative which has achieved brilliant outcomes,” said Coun Jim Aspinall, Ashfield District Council’s lead on health and wellbeing. “Ashfield District Council is keen to continue working with our partners on initiatives like this to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities.”

Individual activity levels have improved by 26.25 per cent with each young person now averaging 12.8 hours of exercise per week. At the same time their TV screen viewing reduced by 27.8 per cent from 7.8 hours to 5.6 hours per week. A remarkable achievement by all involved.

“My child really got involved in this project,” said one of the parents whose family took part. “She eats well now, makes healthier choices and has not had white bread or any kind of drink other than water or milk for the 10 weeks and will keep this up.

“She has enjoyed the physical activity sessions immensely.

“We know what portions of food to eat daily and how much fat/sugar/salt is a little and a lot”

The next session will take place at Sutton’s Lammas Leisure Centre in April. For more information contact Dianne Holmes by emailing: d.c.holmes@ashfield-dc.gov.uk or telephone 01623 457233.
