Once a year Bestwood Village WI open up their meeting for anyone to attend - yes even men!

This year’s open night held on Wednesday 23rd April, turned out to be the hot ticket to have in more ways than one. The guest speaker was BBC East Midlands Today presenter Carol Hinds who proved to be a popular choice as the tickets sold out in record time.

The audience, keen to get a good seat, turned up early and began the evening with a hot drink and a home-baked cake. That was when things began to get a little over-heated.

The combination of an over-excited tea urn and a over-sensitive smoke alarm resulted in an evacuation of the Community Centre and everyone being cooled off in the steady rain outside.

Once Simon West, Steward of the Social Club, had saved the day by resetting the alarm the evening could continue as planned, just in time for Carol Hinds to arrive. She seemed genuinely upset to have missed out of the excitement - once a news reporter, always a news reporter!

Carol’s talk on how the news is made was a real eye opener and was interspersed with amusing anecdotes from her reporting career.

Her talk included a couple of films called “How we do things” and “How we don’t do things” - the second of which contained a great selection of out-takes from the cutting room floor.

Between the films Carol explained her role both in front of the camera and behind it. She spoke of how things have changed over the 25 years she has been in the industry.

A question and answer session followed when Carol was very comfortable fielding enquiries as diverse as ‘Do you do your own hair and make-up?’ and ‘What will the BBC be called if Scotland gain independence?’

She was happy to stay behind afterwards to talk to members over a coffee and some lemon drizzle cake. To say a little thank you to her, and all our newsroom favourites, we presented Carol with a tin containing one of Christine’s wonderful Victoria sponge cakes.

We will be looking for the crumbs around the EMT set next time the news is on air.

Photographs of the event can be seen at www.bestwoodvillagewi.org.uk.
