Hucknall’s Edgewood Leisure Centre is set to stay - following a deal between a council and a management company.

The centre, and another in Huthwaite, had been earmarked for closure as part of Ashfield District Council plans to balance its budget.

But, following negotiations with Sports and Leisure Management Limited (SLM Ltd) - the company behind the Everyone Active brand which manages Ashfield’s leisure centres - the future of the facility has now been secured.

This is because the council has agreed a new five-year contract with SLM.

Council leader Chris Baron said that the move has come about because the health and well-being of residents is one of the council’s top priorities.

He was asked by members to enter negotiations with SLM and as a result they agreed to pay a reduced management fee which will also see the firm keeping the leisure centres open.

“It’s a really good deal for the Ashfield council taxpayer and is a great deal for people who want to use the leisure facilities,” he said.

Attendance levels across the six Ashfield leisure centres increased last year (2013/14) to over 1.4m visits, double the figures recorded 12 years ago.

Simon Fearn, area contracts manager for Everyone Active, said: “We are delighted to have helped secure the future of the leisure centres in Ashfield and to continue our current partnership with Ashfield District Council.

“We are committed to providing the highest standard of leisure activities in the Ashfield area working with the council and local communities to develop programmes that deliver more choice.”
