Drink drive charge costs Mansfield man his new job

Samuel Hawkins, 23, of Middleton Road, Clipstone Village, admitted drink driving after he was breathalysed in the early hours of July 10, on King’s Mill Road East, in Sutton.

A breath test showed he had 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The court heard he was stopped while driving friends home from a barbecue, but had been swerving between the lanes.

Andrew Bevan, mitigating, said: “He accepts that what he has done is wrong. It is a learning curve for a young man.”

He said that Hawkins had quit his sales job after landing a new position with an energy company in Rotherham. But because of the inevitable disqualification he was now unemployed as he wouldn’t be able to drive to work.

The court heard he suffered from depression and had debts of £10,000.

Mansfield magistrates banned him from driving for 14 months. He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a 330 victim surcharge.
