Duke Street signs cause road '˜muddle'

The grand old Duke of York is famous for marching his 10,000 men up to the top of the hill and marching them down again.

And drivers visiting Duke Street, Hucknall, could be forgiven for thinking the road is named after him because they might not know whether they are coming or going.

Signs indicate that access from the street to the Byron Bingo Hall traffic-light junction is for buses and cyclists only.

But in a 10-minute survey by the Dispatch, a taxi, another car and a van ignored the ‘No Entry’ signs and turned right onto Portland Road.

Another sign apparently encourages drivers to proceed through the junction to follow a diversion from Ashgate Road, due to continuing work on the new Hucknall inner relief road.

A resident of Duke Street who did not want to be named said: “It’s no wonder people are getting confused.

“Owing to a lack of signs at the Beardall Street end, an articulated lorry once came down the street without realising it was not supposed to and it had to back all the way out again.”

Duke Street was formerly part of a Trent Barton bus route. But this ceased many years ago and school buses are now the only ones which travel on the street.

Notts county councillor John Wilmott is taking up the issue.

He said: “Something should be done to sort out this muddle as part of the town-centre regeneration scheme now being carried out.”

Duke Street will be closed, from its junction with Portland Road for a distance of 40m in a south-westwardly direction, from Thursday October 13 until Monday, October 17, for engineering work by Harlaxton Energy Networks Limited.
