Fundraising walk for vital canine helpers

The public and their dogs are invited to take part in a sponsored walk raising money for guide dogs for the blind.

And all those who complete the 4.5-mile trek will be treated to a superhero cape for their dogs followed by a buffet.

The Dogs Unite event, which starts at Edwinstowe’s Black Swan pub at 1pm on 14th June and finishes there afterwards, is in aid of the Guide Dogs charity.

Steve Bowles, Guide Dogs fundraising coordinator for Edwinstowe, said the dogs were a vital lifeline for the blind.

“I lost my sight six years ago, but my dog, May, transformed my life completely,” said Steve.

“I went to bed one night and when I woke up I could not see after suffering a massive haemorrhage.

“I went from a full, working life to being sat in a chair, unable to move.”

Fourty-one year-old Steve sank into a spiral of depression and anger and was left feeling like the future had nothing to offer him.

He added: “They give you a walking cane but it is very lonely, because people’s first instinct when they see anyone with a cane is to move away.

“You feel more and more cut off as time goes by.

“But then someone mentioned guide dogs and I just could not believe what they were capable of.”

May was given two weeks’ training and since then the pair have not looked back.

Said Steve: “Now I do not have to depend on anyone - that is why I think it is so important to support they work they do.”

It costs about £50,000 to train and care for a guide dog during its working life.

If you would like to take part in the walk on 14th June there is a £3 entry fee, all of which goes to Guide Dogs.

You can register on the day or by visiting www.guidedogs.org.uk/dogs-unite/find-events/edwinstowe-dogs-unite.

I was hoping you would be able to help us promote our fundraising event for Guide Dogs which will take place on Saturday 14th June. We are inviting the public and their dogs to join us on a 5 mile walk which will begin at the Black Swan at 1pm and finish back at the pub after walking through Sherwood Forest.

The event is just £3 to enter which can be paid on the day or through our registration form at the link below. All participants will receive a free goodie bag, a superhero cape for their dogs and the Black Swan have kindly put on a buffet for all after completing the walk. Of course, people are welcome to join without dogs too.

All funds raised will go to Guide Dogs.
