MORE than 500 people crowded into Hucknall Parish Church when a service of thanksgiving was held for the life of former local police officer John Hardy.
Mr Hardy (69), of Kersall Gardens, Hucknall, died on Sunday 22nd September after a battle with stomach cancer.
Canon Kathryn Herrod, said the building had seldom been so full.
“This goes to show the great respect felt in the community for John Hardy.”
Among a wide variety of interests, he was secretary of Hucknall 50-Plus Group, a stalwart of Hucknall Titchfield Park Bowling Club and the St John Ambulance organisation, and a Freemason.
Mr Hardy leaves his wife, Pat, in addition to a son, a daughter, two sons-in-law and two grand-daughters.
Canon Herrod said Mr Hardy had left a ‘great legacy’ for the community and he was a ‘shining example, especially for young people, on how to live a good life’.
She added: “With his wisdom and a great sense of humour, he made a difference to people he shared his life with.”
Another tribute read: “John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and a man who gave his time tirelessly for others. He will be sadly missed.”
The service was followed by a private cremation and refreshments were served at the Royal British Legion Club on Beardall Street, Hucknall. Donations in memory of Mr Hardy were received for Macmillan Cancer Support.
